I am your Beloved Too

Friday, July 1st, 2011

I used to be really jealous of the Apostle John. I know he hasn’t been around for over two thousand years but let me explain why… Early in my Christian walk, I read the entire New Testament for the very first time. I was comfortable while reading Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but when I got to the book of John, I got a little agitated, to say the least. Throughout the Gospel of John, John never gives his name; instead, he refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved or Jesus’ beloved. (John 13:23; 20:2; 21:7; 21:20). The reality is Jesus never called John his beloved; it was John who identified himself this way. But John was so convincing in his declaration that I believed what he said was true. And I assumed the Lord seemed to love John more than everybody else. I thought to myself, “John is such a braggadocio! Lord, how can I be your beloved too?!”

I have since learned that John was indeed Jesus’ beloved. We all are! The apostle John taught me what it really means to receive the love of God. I mean, picture him in John 13:23 (NKJV) “Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.” He was a young adult man leaning on Jesus’ chest as if he were a kid all over again. I don’t know many young men who would have the courage to do this in this day and time, but to lean on Jesus… what an experience that must have been.

When you fully embrace the love of Jesus, you do not seem to care about what others say about you. God has the final say. You do not seem to listen to the lying vanities of the evil one. God has already defeated him. You do not seem to let life’s circumstances drive you into a frenzy. You understand earth is just a temporary place. To truly receive the love of God means to realize your value- how much you are worth to the Lord. You are so valuable to Him that you were worth dying for. You are so valuable to Him that He brought you to this planet called earth because you have something someone needs. This was John’s secret revelation. He was an eyewitness to the things that Jesus went through just for him, just for you, and just for me. And out of that experience, he discovered that he was all of that, plus some.

So prior to pursuing your purpose or your destiny, first take the time to embrace the love of Jesus. The initial step is to accept Him into your heart. If you have not done so already, repeat this prayer out loud. “Lord, I repent of my sins. I believe that you are the son of God and God has raised you from the dead. I receive you into my heart. May I come to know the love of God more and more each day. Thank you for loving me so much that you paid the ultimate sacrifice and died for me. Help me along this journey of life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” Now, my friend, you are ready to carry out your godly purpose, and I’m confident that this month’s articles will further empower you. God bless!

Dear Valentine,
You have always been there for me even while I was being formed in my mother’s belly. (Jeremiah 1:5)

You formed every part of my being. (Psalms 139:13)

You know me better than I know myself. (Psalms 139:1-4)

You comfort me during my time of need. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Your love runs so deep that nothing and I mean nothing can separate me from it. (Romans 8:38-39)

Your presence saturates my very being with peace. (Exodus 33:14)

You are always thinking of me. (Psalms 139:17)

You protect me from all evil. (Psalms 121:7)

You are faithful to me. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

You always fulfill Your promises to me. (2 Corinthians 1:20)

You have an answer to all of my problems. (Proverbs 8:14)

You are omniscient – all knowing. (Isaiah 46:10)

You are my confidante. (Psalms 40:4)

You are my guide. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

You are the pinnacle of all of my friendships. (Proverbs 18:24)

Sweet Valentine, you mean the world to me. I wouldn’t trade You for riches or any other material thing because Your value far exceeds things created and/or manufactured here on earth. You treat me so much better than I treat You. And You continue to put up with my faults and my shortcomings. Even on my worst days, Your love doesn’t change for me. Everyday, You manage to wrap Your loving arms around me to tell me how much You love me. Even though You share your love with others, You have a unique way of making me feel like I am the only one. How sweet this is! I love you my Valentine.

Why must I love my enemies?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

All of us find it much simpler to hate our enemies.  When someone does us wrong, we would rather wish harm upon them instead of loving them as God would have us to do.  When we respond viciously towards our enemies, how different are we from them?  Are we exhibiting brotherly love as required?  Are we representing Christ in a worthy manner?

To show love does not mean you have to become “buddy-buddy” with your enemy.  It means to pray and speak blessings upon your enemy’s life and not curses.  It means to supply your enemy with resources to meet their physical need: food and clothing.  It means to treat your enemy as you would like to be treated.  When you do these things, you are, in essence, ministering the love of God through the life you live.

As you remain faithful to walk in love, you will heap coals of fire on your enemy’s head.  In other words, your enemy will be so remorseful, ashamed, and convicted that it may lead them to repentance.  Through your acts of love, you can influence another lost soul to join the kingdom of God.  What a powerful principle to know!!!  Make a decision to represent Jesus and walk in love!

Key scriptures (NKJV):

Romans 12:20-21

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Matthew 5:44

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
