Why must I love my enemies?

All of us find it much simpler to hate our enemies.  When someone does us wrong, we would rather wish harm upon them instead of loving them as God would have us to do.  When we respond viciously towards our enemies, how different are we from them?  Are we exhibiting brotherly love as required?  Are we representing Christ in a worthy manner?

To show love does not mean you have to become “buddy-buddy” with your enemy.  It means to pray and speak blessings upon your enemy’s life and not curses.  It means to supply your enemy with resources to meet their physical need: food and clothing.  It means to treat your enemy as you would like to be treated.  When you do these things, you are, in essence, ministering the love of God through the life you live.

As you remain faithful to walk in love, you will heap coals of fire on your enemy’s head.  In other words, your enemy will be so remorseful, ashamed, and convicted that it may lead them to repentance.  Through your acts of love, you can influence another lost soul to join the kingdom of God.  What a powerful principle to know!!!  Make a decision to represent Jesus and walk in love!

Key scriptures (NKJV):

Romans 12:20-21

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Matthew 5:44

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

Why is it so hard for us to practice humility at times? I find it hard to remain humble in situations involving others. Yesterday, in church our Pastor preached on true love and he read 1 John 4:7-12. This chapter talked about love coming from God, and how we should love each other because he loves us. I was definately convicted yesterday because it made me think about a situation on my job where I decided to repay evil with evil. I am ashamed of my behavior and I would like to apologize, but my pride stands in the way. I am going to pray about this situation and I will apologize…just give me a day or two..lol.. With all of this being said I was taught the true meaning of love and it is not a feeling; it comes from God.
